An unusually attractive dominant feature of the country, standing on a large rocky hill above the meeting point of the Rivers Danube and Morava. Its irregular layout corresponds with the shape of the castle rock.
Devin Castle, together with Nitra and Bratislava Castles, are the historically oldest known castles in Slovakia.
It is situated above the meeting point of the Rivers Danube and Morava, a place which had settlers in ancient times, part of the Limes Romanus protective border system, significant Great Moravia protective fortress, Duke Rastislav's castle district. In the 13th Century, the mid- and upper-castle was built, further buildings were developed in the second half of the 16th Century, in 1809 the castle was damaged by Napoleon's army. Since the 1930s, archaeological research has taken place here, in individual parts of the castle the groundplans of the discovered buildings are marked. In the basement of the mid-castle, there is an exhibition room, parts of the upper castle are partially adapated caves.
In 1961, it was declared a National Cultural Site.
