Short history of castle Strecno Castle is situated 7km from Zilina on a 103m high rock above the River Vah. The castle is mentioned for the first time in the times of Matus Cak as a centre of greater feudal lordship. The castle originates from between the 13th and 14th Centuries on older foundations. In the period of late Iron Age, until the older Roman times, the castle hill was a settlement of Puchov culture. The first note of the castle is from 1321, although it is probable that the castle did not exist then. Very probably, the castle was established shortly after the mentioned year, as protection of the toll station situated at the crossing of the River Vah. The first written note of the existence of the castle dates back to 1384, where the castle is marked as "comitatus castri Strechyn".
As king's property, at the beginning of the 15th Century it became the property of the Queens Barbara and, later, Elizabeth. From 1444 to 1469, it was the property of the Pongrac family from Liptovsky Mikulas. Then it changed owners quickly. We can mention Jan Korvin, Jan Zapolsky, Mikulas and Peter Kostka, Dersszewffy. In the 17th Century, it belonged to Franz Vesselenyi and the Löwenburgs. In the 17th Century, the castle provided good protection to the Thököly uprisers. That is why the Emperor Leopold I's army destroyed the outer fortification and also damaged the castle buildings. Since then, the castle has been a ruin.
At the start of the 20th Century, the walls were preserved but the main expensive reconstruction of the castle was carried out in the 1990s and the castle was opened to the public.
