 Chateu Bojnice - Slovakia

Short info
Bojnice Castle is a natural, cultural site and the seat of the museum. It ranks amongst the most beautiful historical sites in Slovakia.
Bojnice Castle is one of the oldest and most significant Slovak castles. It stands on a travertine hill above the town of Bojnice. The first written note of the existence of the castle is from 1113.

It was originally a wooden castle developed on the site of the older castle. Gradually during the 13th Century, it was built of stone as the property of the Poznan family.

At the end of the 13th Century, Bojnice was conquered by Ungrian magnate, Matus Cak Trenciansky and he owned the castle until 1321.

Bojnice Castle and the estate was always the king's property. The king gave them to his loyal magnates as temporary or inheritable property. According to legend, King Matej liked to go to Bojnice and used to sit under the linden tree opposite the castle entrance; this tree was called King Matej's linden tree.

In 1950, the Nitra Regional Museum was established in Bojnice Castle. Today's museum is part of the Slovak National Museum. In 1970, the castle was pronounced a Natural Cultural Site.
