Short info
The Church of St. Jacob in Levoca
ranks amongst the largest Gothic churches in Slovakia. It is an operating church and it has served believers daily for more than 700 years as a parish church of the former free king's town of Levoca.
Apart from the church alone, there are other cultural sites - the works of the renowned medieval carver
Master Paul of Levoca and works of the Baroque goldsmith, Jan Szilassy.
Roman Catholic Parish Church of St. Jacob ranks amongst the most significant sacred arts in Slovakia. The most admirable is the main altar which is, at the same time,
the highest Gothic altar in the world. The altar measures 18 metres and 62 centimetres.
Apart from the Gothic altar, another national site is the work of Jan Szilassy - monstrances,
chalices and other sacral objects, decorated with enamelled and embossed decor, set with precious stones and Czech garnate from the second half of the 18th Century.
This masterpiece was pronounced a Natural Cultural Site in 1992.
