Short info
Harmanecka Cave is one of the most significant caves in Slovakia. Underground tunnels and caverns are created in Mesozoic limestone from the middle Triassic period. The cave has a cavity-tunnel nature. The fissures were widened by water activity and later they were modified by the erosion and falling of rocks which created larger caverns and domes. Harmanecka Cave is also called White Cave thanks to the roofing rock of pure limestone.
The cave is also famour for the large amount of bats, so far 11 types have been found. The main type is the common bat and the lesser mouse-eared bat (in numbers of 1000 to 1500). Other species found in this cave are pipistrelle bats and Daubenton's bat.
