Short info It is situated in north east Slovakia, 40km north of Vysne Ruzbachy Spa in the mountains of Spisska Magura and partially forms the border with Poland.
Pieniny is our smallest national park, the reserve area is 22,300 ha. It touches the counties of Kezmarok and Stara Lubovna. Under the massif of Three Crowns, the Dunajec River makes its way through the narrow, 8.5km long limestone gorge. Dunajec Gorge itself ranks amongst the largest natural features of the Pieniny National Park. In 1967, it was declared as State Nature Reserve. 20 species of fish live in the Dunajec River, including trout and Danube salmon (hucho hucho).
The attraction of this area is rafting on wooden rafts through the largest canyon in Central Europe – through the canyon of the Dunajec River – from the raft port of Majere-Kvasne Luky to Lesnica at a length of 11 km, and from the port of Cerveny Klastor to Lesnica at a length of 9 km, upon request. Transport back is provided by a shuttle, taxis, bicycles or on foot on marked footpaths. Directly in the village of Cerveny Klastor, there is a national cultural site from the beginning of the 14th Century - Cartusian-Camaldut monastery. This monastery became famous thanks to the monk, Cyprian, who cultivated healing plants. He produced a large herbery which is part of the exhibition of the Natural Sciences Museum in the monastery.
