Orava Castle is situated 59km northeast of Zilina. It ranks amongst the most significant sites of castle buildings in Slovakia. The castle hill had settlements in prehistoric times.
The first historic data about Orava Castle is from 1267. Between 1556-1621, the Turzo family reconstructed and fortified the castle. In 1606, the Turzo family obtained Orava as family property. In 1800, the castle suffered the greatest catastrophe when it was totally burnt down and remained abandoned. In 1868, one of the first museums in Slovakia was located in the unused castle complex. The beginnings of Orava history dates back the period of paleolithic hunters from the younger ages of the late Stone Age. The settlement in Orava in the late Stone Age was quite sporadic, when the people of Baden culture settled there and later it was populated by the Bosacs.
The Slavians also left significant marks in Orava. They mostly likely arrived at the end of the 8th Century. They left the castle district where previously the people of Puchov had settled. Orava Castle is an attractive destination for tourists.
