Ruin of Zborov castle - Slovakia

Short history of castle
The ruins of the castle also called Makovica lies on a forested hill south of the village of Zborov at an altitude of 474 asl.

The castle was built on the place of the old castle district, probably in the 13th or beginning of the 14th Century to protect the Ungrian-Polish route.
In 1364 - 1470 the castle was the property of the Cudar family and when the name died out, King Matej gave the property to the Rozgonyi family who stayed there until 1512. After them, the lordship passed to the ownership of the Tarczay family who owned it until 1548. The next new owners, the Seredy family, who owned the castle from 1548 to 1601, carried out great building works so the castle would meet the new fortification requirements related to the protection of the country from the Turks. In 1601, the castle and lordship was bought by the Rakoczi family. During a union uprising, the emperor's army attacked the castle and demolished it in 1684. Its ruins were further badly damaged during battles in 1914 between the Russian and Austrian-Ungrian armies.

The walls, some only the foundations, remained from the large, originally medieval castle, reconstructed in the Renaissance style. Some walls remained quite built up, with preserved arrow slits, corner bricks, window openings and doors. Some walls have Renaissance plaster with simple graphite ornaments.

The castle ruins are accessible via a forest path from the village of Dlha Luka (30 - 45 min).
