Slovak library for sightless in Levoca - Slovakia

Unique library
The Slovak Library of Matej Hrebenda for the Blind in Levoca is the only and unique national library-information centre for the sight-impaired people of the Slovak Republic and for Slovaks living abroad. From 1. 1. 1999 it is a State sponsored organisation directly managed by the Ministry of Culture of SR.
The mission of SLM is to process documents - books, textbooks, magazines - into forms accessible for the blind. In practice, it means that SLM issues its products in Braille, on CDs and cassettes, in large print and in digital form. Such processed documents are filed in the library contents and are accessible for the blind or partially sighted persons and other interested parties via presentations, postal and rental services.
SLM methodologically manages 26 departments for blind and partially sighted users in public libraries throughout Slovakia, including the Town Library in Bratislava, to which it also provides audible documents.

Jozef Vrabel (8. 3. 1911 – 8. 5. 1964) took the greatest part in the establishment of a printing workshop for the blind. 28.11.1946 was the date of establishment of the printing workshop for the blind in Levoca named Slovak Blind Print. The real history of the printing workshop for the blind in Slovakia goes back to 1 October 1948 by putting this cultural institution into operation.
The first library holding books in Braille was established on 25.10.955 in Bahon (14 books). It moved to Levoca in 1971. On 21 May 1976 the facility building of the Printing Workshop and Library for the Blind was opened. The Slovak Library for the Blind is dedicated to Matej Hrebenda (1796 – 1880), patriot, blind distributor or Slovak and Czech books, who offered them and therefore was spreading national literature.
