Short from history A partially preserved large castle, situated on the steep rock above the county town of Trencin.
The first proven architectural site on the hill was a stone residential tower and rotunda from the 11th Century, when the castle served to protect the kingdom and western borders. At the end of the 13th Century, the castle became the property of Palatin Matus Cak, a significant oligarch, who controlled a large area and became a legendary lord of the River Vah and the Tatras. After Matus' death, the castle belonged to the Emperor until the end of the 15th Century.
The upper castle was extended by Louis from Anjou with a new palace and fortifications. At the end of the 15th Century, the castle and the town were obtained by Stefan Zapolsky and he started larger reconstructions. Renewal and extension of the large fortification which puts Trencin Castle, together with Spis and Devin Castles, amongst the largest European castles, were carried out from 1540-1560. It was then that they built star-shaped protection following the projects of Italian architects and modernised the buildings according to historical examples. In 1790, there was a great fire in the town which also affected the castle. Since the end of the 1950s, the castle has been undertaking complex reconstruction and conservation of the fortifications. There are historic exhibitions of Trencin Museum in the castle (founded in 1877), related to the history of the region and the castle itself.
