Velka Fatra ranks amongst the largest and most typical core mountains of Slovakia, where the various and untouched natural environment is preserved.
The relief of Velka Fatra is very rangy with a great altitude range. Because of this altitude gradient, Velka Fatra ranks amongst the high mountain ranges of Slovakia. The remains of relics of pine forests on limestone rocks rank amongst rare plant communities.
The majority of wildlife in the Velka Fatra area are mountain varieties. So far, 110 types of nesting birds and 60 types of mammals have been found there. Of predators, we can mention bears, lynx and wolves. The rare mountain eagle nests here.
Due to the need to protect nature, Velka Fatra was pronounced a
National Park. Velka Fatra, together with neighbouring valleys, is rich in underground water, from which many springs are also used.
