Location

The City of Luhačovice lies in the south-eastern part of the Czech Republic, in the Zlín district. It occupies a valley, whose elevation is a minimum of 250m above sea level. The north-western edge of the valley is formed by the slopes of Malé Kamenné, the south-eastern part is formed by the forested Obětové peak (511 m above sea level), the southern section of the vale is surrounded by the hills Velké Kamenné (385 m), Solné (451 m), Zálužné (446m), Lužné (428 m) and Ovčírny (429m). All of these hills are part of the Vizovické vrchoviny (The Vizovice Heights) and the Bílý Karpat (The White Carpathians). The highest peak in the Luhačovice area is Komonec, 672 m above sea level. The eastern and south-eastern sections of the Luhačovice vicinity are part of the Chráněné krajinné oblasti Bílé Karpaty (The White Carpathian Protected Scenic Region).

The stream Horní Olšava, also called Šťavnice or Ščavnica, flows through the Luhačovice valley. The source is in Valašskokloboucko beneath the hill Klokočí (662m) north of the village of Slopné. In 1928 a valley reservoir was built on its banks about 2 km from the centre of the spa. It prevents water surges and protects the spa square from formerly frequent flooding. Near the peak Jestřabí, the brook Gáborka and somewhat lower the Pozlovický brook empty into the Horní Olšava from the left.

On the territory of Luhačovice 16 sodium hydrocarbonate acidulous springs and one sulphurous spring bubble to the surface. Every hour, 15 thousands litres of mineral water reach the surface here, containing a large amount of dissolved mineral elements, particularly sodium, calcium, magnesium, chlorine, bromine, iodine, carbonic acid, dissolved carbon dioxide. The temperature of the spring water fluctuates between 10 - 12 °C. The most famous springs, and often the goal for many walks and obligatory stops by spa guests are Vincentka, Aloiska, Ottovka, the springs of Dr. Šťastný and St. Joseph.

The city of Luhačovice is formed by 4 cadastral territories and arose from the amalgamation of the following independent villages: Luhačovice, Řetechov, Polichno, Kladná Žilín.
