The history of the Premonstrate monks in Teplá dates back to 1193, when the Czech noble Hroznata, who at the end of 19th century was dedicated and blessed, founded a monastery. Dientzenhofer. Similar to other Bohemian and Moravian monasteries, Tepla monastery was devastated after the violent expulsion of monks in 1950. In 1990 the Premonstrates returned and since then the monastery has been gradually restored. At present the monastery does not have as full an ecclesiastical life as before and it is open to the public during the whole year. The monastery library is, by its extent of about 100.000 volumes, the second biggest in the Czech Republic. There are rare manuscripts, incunabula and books in all European languages there. The church of Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is a precious example of the transition from a Romanesque style into a gothic style. The baroque interior includes valuable objects from the 18th century.
