The first written reference about the village is from the year 1326. The highest peak of the High Tatras, the Gerlachovský peak (2655 m) was named according to the village. It is situated in the middle of the High Tatras mountain ridge. The village was founded by gold diggers - what is symbolized by crossed hammers in its coat-of-arms. The oldest building is a tower of a Roman-Catholic church from the 13-th century.

The population of the village is about 800 people. Many people offer cheap accommodation for tourists - all together about 150 free beds. Fresh mountain air and beauty of the local nature will satisfy also the most demanding tourists. From the village you can easily get to the mountains (Starý Smokovec 5 km, Štrbské Mountain-lake 15 km, Tatranská Lomnica 13 km, Tatranská Polianka 3 km). Except of hiking there are lots of other activities. You can gather wild fruits or mushrooms from the woods, barbecue, buy healthy homemade food, practice cross-country skiing or cycling. Local tracks lead to Tatranská Polianka and Smokovec.

A traditional tournament "Memorial of 24 Killed Heroes" (they were buried at the local cemetery) is organized in the village every year. International motorcycle competition "Gerlach" is very popular. The race goes to the Sliezsky dom (Sliezsky House) and is 8.4 km long. In surroundings you can ride a horse, visit sauna, fitness center, tennis courts, thermal swimming pools, caves, ski slopes, museums and other relicts of the Spiš towns.
