The first written record of the village under Tatras named Gerlachov is from 1326. The highest peak of Slovakia - Gerlachovský peak (2655 m) is named after it. It is situated in the centre of High Tatras foothill planes. It was founded by gold miners and therefore it has crossed mining hammers in its coat-of-arms. The oldest building is the tower of Roman church from the 13th century.
