The High Tatras - the smallest high mountains in the world with as many as 25 peaks over 2.500 m high. Together with the surrounding mountains Belianske and Západné Tatry, in 1949 they were declared the Tatra National Park.
The village Stará Lesná is situated at their lower boundary. It was founded in the 13th century. The most valuable local sight is the original early Gothic Roman Catholic church with a later dated Renaissance bell tower. Another church without a tower is Evangelical, built in the Classicist style in 1821.
Due to its favourable location in a pleasant countryside, the village Stará Lesná is at present a famous tourist center. The holiday makers will find a comfortable accommodation in the village itself and in its surroundings providing numerous hotels, recreational facilities, pensions, cottages and family houses with catering services and facilities for sports, relaxation and amusement. They offer two swimming pools, tennis courts, saunas, fitness centres, solaria and golf course.
In winter there are well maintained skiing slopes in Tatranská Lomnica, Ždiar and Štrbské Pleso. Throughout the year it is possible to undertake mountaintrips in the High Tatras and in the Slovak Paradise region. Within about 40 km you may visit the historical monuments of Spiš and Gemer such as the castle Spišský Hrad (the largest castle in Middle Europe), St. James Church in Levoča (its 18 m high main altar made of wood is the world´s highest Gothic altar), the Master Paul´s Museum, a wooden church and a Renaissance castle in Kežmarok, the cave Belianska jaskyňa, The Tatra National Park Museum in Tatranská Lomnica. A famous tourist attraction is the raft passage down the river Dunajec (about 7 km) in Pieniny. The thermal swimming pools in Vrbov offer slides and a bathing pool for children.
In the near future the village Stará Lesná is prepared to open a new thermal swimming pool (a 3.616 m deep geothermal bore with a water temperature of 58 degrees Celsius) with a planned operation all the year round.
