The history of Terme Dobrna
TERME DOBRNA is the oldest acting thermal spa in Slovenia, carrying a 600 year-old tradition.
A mild climate, not knowing haze or cold breezes had attracted the first settlers long before that. Archaeological excavations, among them 500 Celtic coins, testify that a fortified settlement existed on a nearby hillock Gradišče already in prehistoric times.
Dobrna was also well known by ancient Romans. It is quite likely that the thermal spring was already used in those times. The thermal spring was also known to the first Slovenian inhabitants, as they named the upper part of their settlement "Toplice", meaning "Spa". The lower part of the settlement "Dobrna" was named after the specific oak tree called 'dob', which grows in this area.
The earliest preserved written records of the spa and the thermal spring are from the year 1403.
