Brachytherapy belongs to modern curative modalities of bronchogenic carcinoma and intrabronchial metastases.
Brachytherapy is a form of radiotherapy where a radioactive source is placed inside or next to the area requiring treatment.
As a source of radiation, different radioactive elements inserted into small sealed tubes or needles are used. They can be also in the form of wires, plates or small "seeds". The source of radiation can come also in liquid form, e.g. radioactive iodine. This radiation technique is used either separately or in combination with an external technique.
It is most often used to treat cervical carcinoma and womb cancer which cannot be operated on, lung cancer, breast cancer, pharynx carcinoma, rectal carcinoma.
It is administered in the local or total anaesthesia.
The therapy has to be prescribed by a doctor who states its duration.
