It is used for inhaling liquid or solid substances most often dispersed in the air (so-called aerodispersoids). These are mainly aerosols (gentle fog up to 10 microns) or sprays (harsh fog, 10 – 40 microns). The most often used are inhaling devices or ultrasonic inhalators. The use of sulphur mineral water (H2S, HS2-, SO2-) has a local antiseptic effects both in its oxidised or reduced forms. Sulphuric waters also reduce the amount of mucus in excessive secretion. H2S concentration should not exceed 0,006%. It is very effective to use sodium chlorid waters (salty waters), which work as expectorants making the phlegm less viscous and thus making the coughing out easier. Salty brome iodine waters contain iodine ions and they work as mucolytic, expectorants and anti-inflammatory agents. With inhaling mineral waters, there can be administered also some medicines in serious cases of dyspnea, or natural salts in catarrh of the upper airways. Herbal decoctions are also recommended. Inhalation therapy is suitable especially for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases of upper and lower airways or in bronchial asthma. The length of inhalation varies and it is prescribed by a doctor.
