It is the local application of heat, which takes advantage of the latent heat transmission during the paraffin hardening process. Paraffin hardens at a temperature of approximately 55°C (52 –56°C),
There are several methods of application:
1. veil method: application of veils soaked in liquid paraffin;
2. method of repeated soaking: short term immersion of, for example, the hand into the paraffin. By repeating this method, a "paraffin glove" is created – this method is mainly suitable for application on small joints and uneven surfaces. Therefore, it is mainly used for the treatment of degenerative diseases of the joints of the hand;
3. method of brushing in layers: similar principle to the repeated soaking;
4. film method: placing a 5 - 10mm thick paraffin film at the moment when the paraffin starts to harden
Local application of heat has a relaxing effect on the skeletal muscles, mainly relieves spasms and contractures (fixed position of part of the body caused by contraction of the muscle), decreases chronic pain, increases local circulation, improves nutrition and tissue healing, softens sinew, is used for resorption of chronic infiltrates and oedemas, has a sedative and immunobiological effect.
Contraindications: For acute inflammations, the local heat increases the pain, supporting the creation of swelling and often worsens the patient's condition. Care must be taken in treatment of seniors and persons with cardiovascular diseases. Local heat cannot be applied to places where there are metal implants.
Duration: circa 20 minutes.
The procedure is prescribed by a doctor on the basis of evaluation of your health.
