Rehabilitation swimming belongs to most important sports for physically handicapped, which only supports the idea of its importance in rehabilitation.

The basic styles are breast-stroke (the main driving force are lower extremities, this style is suitable for better mobility of lower extremity joints), crawl (the main driving force are upper extremities), back-stroke (this style is suitable especially for impaired body position, diseases of spine and lower extremities) and the butterfly (recommended for not yet fixed kyphosis at initial stages of Bechterev's disease).
The styles breaststroke and butterfly are not suitable for cervical spine diseases with overloaded spine muscles, and neither for patients with impairments of intervertebral discs, for the latter the more suitable styles are backstroke or crawl. Read more Hide
