Spa treatments carry a deep secret. Undoubtedly, warm compresses are among the most popular procedures for aching joints and back. In medical terminology, a noble word is used for these natural materials: peloids – essentially healing muds, peat, and fango, shaped by the earth over thousands of years.
At CK Sunflowers, we often hear this question from clients: “Isn't it just warm black mud? Does it matter where I use it?” The answer from doctors and balneologists is clear: it does matter. Each type of this natural wonder has a completely different origin, composition, and most importantly, different effects on your joints, muscles, and skin. Let's look at the three main types encountered in spas.
Peat is a purely organic treasure. It formed over thousands of years in cold and damp mountain areas without access to air, where mosses, ferns, and medicinal herbs gradually decomposed. You'll find it mostly in Czech spas, such as Františkovy Lázně and Mariánské Lázně.
How does it work? Peat is surprisingly dense and has an incredible ability to retain heat. It keeps the body warm up to seven times longer and more intensely than ordinary water. During the wrap, it delivers a huge amount of natural acids (especially humic acid) and trace elements to the body.
Who is it best for? Peat wraps are excellent for chronic, late-stage arthrosis, stiff back muscles, and the cervical spine. Acids contained in peat also have a regenerative effect on the skin and alleviate muscle pain deeply.
Unlike peat, sulfur mud is of inorganic origin. It forms in places where strong thermal sulfur springs emerge. These springs have been bringing fine sediments from the depths of the earth for centuries, which are left to "ripen" in special basins for months under the influence of healing water and specific bacteria. A classic example is the world-famous Piešťany.
How does it work? This mud is extremely oily, with a typical blue-gray to black color and a sulfur scent. Its main weapon is an extremely high content of active sulfur. Sulfur is a fundamental building block of our joint cartilage, tendons, and ligaments.
Who is it best for? Sulfur mud is the best friend of people suffering from inflammatory rheumatic diseases (rheumatism), post-operative joint conditions, fractures, or joint replacement surgeries (endoprosthesis). Sulfur penetrates the skin directly into the joint capsule, halting inflammation, restoring cartilage elasticity, and literally lubricating it from within.
Sea fango (or marine silt) is a combination of a liquid component and fine mineral dust from volcanic rocks and the seabed. It forms in areas where the marine environment mixes with mineral springs, especially found in our offer in Slovenian Portorož.
How does it work? Fango is very fine and is literally infused with sea salts, iodine, bromine, and seaweed. It combines the healing power of heat with deep marine detoxification.
Who is it best for? Sea fango has amazing anti-inflammatory and cleansing effects. It is ideal for people who need to reduce joint swelling, improve limb circulation, and at the same time regenerate skin suffering from psoriasis or eczema. The iodine and bromine released from the warm compress have a profound calming effect on the overloaded nervous system.
As you can see, each "mud" tells its own story and helps the body with different issues. While peat perfectly warms and relaxes the muscles, sulfur mud nourishes the joints, and sea fango reduces inflammation and cleanses them.
